ANTARCTIC METEORITE LOCATION AND MAPPING PROJECT (AMLAMP)
EXPLANATORY TEXT

THIEL MOUNTAINS INTRODUCTION

One of the earliest meteorite finds in Antarctica was from the Thiel Mountains (Ford, 1971). The Thiel Mountains pallasite was found in the vicinity of Mount Wrather (85°23'S 87°14'W). Exploration for meteorite concentrations in that area during the 1982-1983 season failed to yield additional specimens. However, meteorites were found along the Davies Escarpment, approximately 25 kilometers westward, and at the Moulton Escarpment, 70 to the kilometers northwest (Schutt et al., 1983, Schutt, 1989, Harvey and Schutt, 1992).

The area is covered by the U.S.G.S. 1:250000 scale Thiel Mountains and Moulton Escarpment quadrangles. TIL-Figure 1 (78KB JPEG) shows the general location of the Thiel Mountains pallasite. Also shown are the locations of the meteorites found along the Davies Escarpment.
