ANTARCTIC METEORITE LOCATION AND MAPPING PROJECT (AMLAMP)
EXPLANATORY TEXT

Patuxent Range - Brazitis Nunatak Area

Brazitis Nunatak (84°58'S 067°23'W) is a small, isolated nunatak at the southwest corner of the Patuxent Range (PAT-Figure 1- 148 KB JPEG). A number of specimens were found in a small section of a larger ice patch downstream (west) of the nunatak. Brazitis Nunatak can be seen in the distance in PAT25-Figure 2 (40 KB JPEG).

The area was systematically searched, resulting in a total of 34 meteorite specimens being recovered. A scatter field of paired fragments, collected and mapped as PAT91501,0, consisted of approximately 15 fragments strewn about 130 meters downwind from the main mass, which measured 18x14x15 cm. Four additional fragments were found a considerable distance downwind, near the icefield edge.

PAT26-Table 1 gives a tabulation of the meteorite types recovered from Brazitis Nunatak.

A map showing the relative location of the Brazitis Nunatak meteorites is shown in PAT26-Figure 1 (30 KB JPEG). The approximate area covered by the map is shown in PAT-Figure 1 (148 KB JPEG). The locations were determined using single GPS receivers and averaging 25-75 fixes. The stated accuracy of the fixes is plus or minus 100 meters, but is probably better in practice.

Acknowledgments; Francisco Anguita, Ralph Harvey, Alex Krot, John Schutt, Peter Wasilewski, and Michael Zolensky were a members of the 1990-1991 ANSMET field party.
