One indication of how intimately some icefields are mixed up with the intricacies of local glaciology is the presence of moraines, ground up rock brought to the surface as the glaciers advance, retreat and change direction. In this view, from a small nunatak west of the Grosvenor Mountains, you can see the dark seam of rock running through the heart of a moraine that has been cut through by the wind.
