McMurdo lies on the shores of Ross Island, a famous starting point for some of the earliest inland explorations of Antarctica. This convenient site is the farthest south a ship can go, providing a convenient yearly link with the outside world that also allows huge amounts of material to be transported to the continent in support of science. In this view we see the U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Polar Star working its way into McMurdo.
