Grosvenor Mountains - Block Peak-Mauger Nunatak-Mt. Block Area
Block Peak (85º41'S 176º13'E), Mauger Nunatak (85º44'S 176º44'E), and Mt. Block (85º46'S 176º13'E) are small, isolated nunataks in the eastern Grosvenor Mountains (GRO-Figure 1- 85K JPEG). Small bare ice areas are in close proximity to the nunataks and associated moraines. GRO64-Figure 1 (193 KB) is an aerial view from over the Mt. Cecily area looking eastward towards Block Peak, Mauger Nunatak and Mt. Block. Larkman Nunatak is in the near distance.
Abundant terrestrial rock on much of the ice surfaces makes for difficult searching icefields. A single meteorite specimen was found on the ice close to the moraine to the north of Block Peak during a reconnaissance search in the 1985-1986 season (Cassidy, 1992). During the 2006-2007 season an ANSMET field team spent several days conducting detailed reconnaissance and systematic searches of the bare ice areas around Block Peak, Mauger Nunatak, and Mt. Block. A total of 49 meteorite specimens were recovered.
Acknowledgments; ANSMET field party members during the 1985-1986 season were William Cassidy, Peter Englert, Twyla Thomas, and Carl Thompson. The 2006-2007 systematic search team included James Day, Matt Genge, Ralph Harvey, Cliff Leight, Shaun Norman, Don Pettit, Mike Rampey, Linda Welzenbach, and Nicolle Zellner.
