Geologists Range
During the 1985-1986 field season some of the icefields near the upper reaches of the Nimrod Glacier were investigated (Cassidy 1992). The area is at the northwestern extent of the Beardmore region of meteorite localities. GEO85-Figure 1 (147 KB JPEG) is an enlarged portion of the 1:250000 scale U.S.G.S. Geologists Range quadrangle. Two specimens were recovered from the large areas of bare ice in the southern Geologists Range (82°30'S 155°30'E) west of Mt. Sommerson during the 1985-86 season. A sketch map of the areas is shown in GEO85-Figure 2 (32 KB JPEG) (adapted from Cassidy 1992). GEO85-Figure 3 (34 KB JPEG) is an oblique air photo looking westwards, from over Mt. Sommerson, at the ice area that was searched and the locations of the two meteorites found during the 1985-86 season. During the 1999-2000 season a few days were spent in detailed reconnaissance by a two-person team. A total of 30 specimens were recovered from widely spaced areas of the icefield.
GEO85-Table 1 gives a tabulation of the meteorite types from the Geologists Range collection.
