DOMINION RANGE INTRODUCTION

The Dominion Range (85º20'S 166º30'E) is a large triangular shaped range of mountains which sits between the Beardmore and Mill glaciers in the Beardmore region. The Davis Nunataks and Mt. Ward area is a smaller series of nunataks situated about 30 kilometers southward. DOM-Figure 1 (158 KB JPEG) is a portion of the U.S.G.S. 1:250000 scale Plunket Point quadrangle of the Dominion Range.

Ice is stranded and exposed along the southwestern flank of the Dominion Range proper, in the vicinity of Mt. Saunders and Mt. Nimrod. Ice is also exposed in and around the Davis Nunataks and Mt. Ward. Meteorites were discovered in the two widely separated areas of the Dominion Range during reconnaissance searches during the 1985-1986 season. DOM-Figure 2 (42 KB JPEG) shows the traverse route of the 1985-1986 field party through the Dominion Range and Grosvenor Mountains. Systematic searches of the Davis Nunataks - Mt. Ward icefields was undertaken in the 2008-2009 field season.
